2015 Winner Emily Eldridge
on what winning the scholarship meant to her

As an applicant for the 2015 Future Media Leader Scholarship, I knew little about the Alliance for Women in Media, NYC Affiliate (AWM). I recognized that the women in it had impressive backgrounds and that the events they organized were relevant and interesting, however beyond that I couldn’t tell you much more. Fortunately, the scholarship gave me much more than financial aid. Complete with an honorary one-year position on the administrative board, I was able to learn a lot more about this incredible organization.

The beauty of AWM is in its members. The women come from many different parts of the media industry, and are able to share their unique insights. Every event has time built-in to foster networking as the organization truly exists to bring women together. In addition to their general members, the Alliance looks to its board members for event ideas. For example, two of our board members were able to attend the last CES with their companies. They came back to the following meeting and relayed to the rest of us the take-aways of the highly-recognized trade show. As a result, AWM created a virtual reality event, as well as an event centered on the emergence of creative data mining. The Virtual Reality event in March of 2016 partnered with Discovery Communications to bring the headsets to their members as well as a panel of professionals who are using the technology in their field. Prior to this event I doubted the practicality of VR, but the panelists’ insights into the use of VR in travel agencies, training facilities, healthcare labs and consumer marketing helped me see the desirability of these experiences. Later that year, in partnership with Simulmedia they hosted The Impact of Big Data on the Online and Offline Video Ad Space. This event discussed the new and dynamic advertising solutions that stem from the availability of data. The Senior Director of Strategic Partnerships from Oracle Data Cloud, the Head of Industry & Travel from Google and the VP of Acquisition from Casper all spoke on the panel. It was great to hear from these women about their experiences with data and marketing, as well as their predictions for trends.

In addition to the board position, the scholarship offers a shadowing opportunity. With my interest in multi-platform media and the changes in brand partnerships/marketing, AWM set me up to shadow Stephanie McKillop, a member of the brand strategy team at Twitter. I spent the day at Twitter’s NYC office going to a few meetings with Stephanie and attending informationals that she set up based on my interests. I met with a brand planner, and someone from their legal team which helped round out my experience. Seeing the campaigns that they’ve enacted, hearing about future integrations and experiencing prototypes of what they will be rolling out made my day at Twitter very memorable.

This scholarship is certainly one that would be extremely beneficial to any college student interested in the media industry and I highly encourage all to apply. The shadowing opportunity is priceless, and the organization has had a plethora of events that would be beneficial for anyone, whether she is mildly interested in media, or her career is centered on it. AWM has unique partnerships that continually expand their members’ networks, they host impressive panels to provide their members with insights and opportunities, and they are constantly striving to offer the best events they can. The scholarship may have drawn me to this organization but the people and the opportunities within will keep me renewing my membership year after year.
